2014 African Youth Games : Preparations underway in MINSEP

Preparations have heighten in the Ministry of sports as Cameroon looks forward in taking part in the 2nd edition of the African Youth Games billed to commence from the 22nd – 31st of May 2014 in Gaborone Botswana. Read more


With the goal of promoting and encouraging young talents and assuring the effective replacement of aging athletes, the African Youth Games comes up after every four year in prelude to the Olympic Youth Games. This year’s Olympic Youth Games will be hosted by China from the 16-28 of August 2014. The first edition of the African Youth Games was hosted by Morocco in 2010 where Cameroon was ranked 5th out of the 52 participating countries with 17 medals.

This year’s competition will involve some 20 disciplines. But Cameroon will be competing in just five disciplines wherein exist greater chances of maximizing medals. The disciplines include Athletics, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, and Weightlifting with athletes’ ages ranging from 14-18 years. In the very first preparatory meeting held in the conference hall of the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education on the 12 of March 2014, the Sports Boss ADOUM GAROUA described the event as a major one. This is because the competition meets the option of the State to orientate our sports policy on laying emphasis on the detection of youthful talents. He also stressed on the official of the Federations concerned and trainers in particular to strictly respect the age rang of the Games. He concluded that the preparation of athletes should be taken serious so as to improve on the ranking of Cameroon and number of medals harvested in 2010. The competition also constitutes a forum to promote the image of Cameroon and the rich diversify culture of our country, he landed.
